Salad with Tahini Dressing

Star Q

I have been told a couple of times (well, more than once is a couple of times!) that my body is acidic and I need to do something to make my body more alkaline.  I have read a lot (trusted names in the internet, at least) about how to go about achieving this.

Lunchbox - Potatoes and Olives Salad

Star Q

I love one-pot anything that makes life easier when it comes to cooking and eating.  This is especially so with lunchboxes where you only have to bring one container and you have all your dietary needs in one dish.  Contrary to the local lunchboxes where you would have one part rice, one part protein and one part vegetables and three parts of cumbersome containers to carry to work!

Mee Kari Rempah Wangi

Star Q

A few weekends ago I was literally left alone to my own resources at home.  My missus had gone to Tanjung Malim with her sisters, nieces and nephews to attend her brother's wedding reception.  And on the day that she was supposed to come home, I got a call from her asking me to  cook something.

Murtabak Roti Berkeju

Star Q

My wife had made a batch of currypuffs the other day and she purposely made the filling more than the pastry because one of our family members really love to snack on the curry filling.  However, she made the filling a little bit too much because that family member of ours decided she had had too much of the filling to snack on.

Layered Potato Bread Pie

Star Q

It's been quite some time since I made Layered Bread Pie.   In fact, it's been too long, I can't even remember the last I did make one!  Anyway, the only thing I still remember about the pie was that I only used bread to layer the pie (plus my siblings and parents loved it1)

East Meets West Roast Chicken

Entries in My Other Blogs :

It's just the two of us at home today; me and my daughter!  The missus had gone to her sister's place yesterday to send our other daughter back there to further her studies.  I didn't go with because it was a school day (yes! yet another Saturday!  Thankfully, it's the last for this year!)  Anyway, it saves a lot travelling by train than having me to send them there because it's not just the cost of the journey but also the money that we spend during the many pit-stops that we make all along the journey and back!

Lunch Box Potato Salad

Entries in My Other Blogs :

It's tough having to think of different and interesting types of food to put in your lunch-box and take to work.  Plus you hope that whatever food you bring will be able to sustain you until you reach home in the evening.  For me, bringing food to work is nothing new, because I have been doing this ever since I was in primary school; beginning from the age of seven!

Home-made Hand-made Currypuffs

Whenever my wife and I make currypuffs, we will always finish up one kilo of flour to make the pastry.  That may sound a lot for a family of four (minus one who is now staying with her aunt!) but this is something we cannot get enough of, including myself!  I personally can eat this for breakfast, lunch, dinner and in-between!    In fact, we even freeze half of the currypuffs to be fried and consumed on a later date; which incidentally, is another reason why we make such a huge batch!

Vol-au-vent of Love

I am of the opinion that one does not have to wait for February the fourteenth to express one's love, because for me love can (and should!) be expressed every day of the year.  In fact love can be expressed in many forms.

So, today just to prove myself right, I have decided to express my feelings of love by making this very French pastry (with a very Malaysian filling!)  Incidentally, vol-au-vent was created by a French named Antonin Careme in rue de la Paix in 1803-04.

Tuna and Potato Puffs

It's another long weekend (spelled looooooong weekend!) and I was thinking of getting up late.  Then again who would ever think of such a thing, when one can actually hear the puff pastry in the fridge calling your name, and insisting that it be turned into something delectable for breakfast.

Breakfast?  Oh well!  Even though initially I felt breakfast and puff pastry do not go together especially if I am the one preparing them, I lazily got up and immediately peeled some potatoes and began frying the filling for the puffs (after Suboh prayer that is!)  It was time consuming, but I was happy to see the puff pastry rise!  I must admit though, that the one and a half hour that I spent to prepare the puffs from start to finish was, well, worth it.

Fun Frikandels

One of the things that all my kids love to eat is frikandel (or 'bergedil' in Malay)  Frikandel, which were initially made to accompany our Soto Nasi Himpit as part of the garnish has now evolved into a food on it's own, a side dish and some times (more often than not!) as my kids' snack!

So it is no wonder that my wife (with my help) prepared a large batch of frikandel to take to Seremban where our daughter is working part-time while waiting for her SPM examination results.  I find preparing this dish a bit tedious due to the many steps taken.  Thankfully, eating it is such a pleasure and quite addictive.  As with many popular dishes which have many variations, this is my version!

Potato and Tuna Cakes

It has been a long while since I ate at the school canteen.  Not that the food there is not nice but sometimes (actually, most of the time!) the food tend to be swimming in oil and coconut milk and even the vegetables look wilted and unappetizing.  Apart from that, I find eating at the canteen a waste of time because when you sit there to eat, you tend to spend your time with idle gossips or reading the newspapers other than eating.

Reinvention of Nigella's Hash Brown

I just came back from Seremban yesterday and was ready to make Chicken Pot Pie for breakfast today.  But my wife suggested that it would better if I waited for our son to come back on Tuesday so that every one could enjoy the flaky pastry crusted pie!  And so I conceded with the suggestion and decided to do a remake of Nigella's hash brown which I used to make once!  This time I thought, instead of frying everything, perhaps I should just boil them.  I should have anticipated the result!!!  A hash brown that resembled more of a potato salad.  Well, nobody minded having potato salad for breakfast.  At least, I didn't!

Potato Rosti

What can I say?  I had the oven out and there were some ingredients in the fridge and larder plus every body was hungry, so this is what I came up with.  I used to make potato rosti, but they have always been fried and in fact, I've never tried this one.  But it turned out just nice, a little tricky getting them out of the cupcake pan though, so next time I'll grease it with a little more margarine!  My kids loved it with some chili sauce (of course, to them, everything would taste better with some chili sauce!)  I only made a small batch of twelve rostis (enough for the cupcake pan) and it was gone before I know it!  And it didn't take long to put together either!
