Starfruit Chili Crab

I have never been an efficianado of crabs, no matter how it is prepared.  It is however the favourite of all my children, especially the youngest.  Of course crab is very expensive over here, thus it is more of a luxury food which is only prepared for special occasions.  And my children prefer the crabs to be  prepared chili-style than anything else.

Since I don't eat crabs, and about the only thing about the crab dish I do eat is the sauce, I thought of changing some of the ingredients usually used in preparing the dish.  I had some very ripe starfruit in the fridge (as usual I use what ever I have!), so I decided to puree the fruit and mix it together with other spices.  The result is, well, finger-licking food!
  • 4 large blue crabs (prepared, seasoned with salt and turmeric and fry until half cooked)
  • 10 shallots
  • 10 pips garlic
  • 1 thumb-size ginger
  • 10 red chilies
  • 5 red tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 ripe starfruit, pureed
  • 4 tbs vegetable oil
  • spring onions for garnishing
  • salt and pepper
Blitz the shallots, garlic, ginger and chilies in a food processor.  Saute this mixture until the oil rises to the surfaces.  Stir in the pureed starfruit and continue to fry until mixture dries up a bit.  Then add in the crabs, tomatoes and salt and pepper to taste.  Serve hot and garnish with spring onions.
